ISO/IEC 27003:2017 Guidance for building an ISMS

This document helps organizations reason through the work of establishing and operating an ISMS. It is useful as implementation context when roles, scope, processes and improvement activity need to be made concrete.

It supports the ISMS requirements in ISO/IEC 27001, but the current published text was written for the superseded 2013 requirements edition.

Practical interpretation

How to use this reference

These are editorial starting points, not copied requirements or an implementation checklist from the standard.

Questions and actions

  1. Turn the ISMS scope into a sequence of ownership and operating decisions.
  2. Identify gaps between existing processes and current 27001 requirements.
  3. Check every inherited interpretation against the 2022 requirements edition.

Evidence to look for

  • Implementation roadmap
  • Role and responsibility map
  • Edition cross-check notes

Illustrative example

What it could look like

An organization has policies but no clear handoff between risk owners and control operators. Its implementation team maps those handoffs and then checks the plan against the current 27001 edition.

Boundary to keep clear

Do not present 27003:2017 as clause-by-clause guidance written for ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
