Enterprise AI needs governed access paths that survive product and vendor change

Tailscale Aperture reaches general availability for controlled AI access, while OpenAI's planned Cursor transition shows why coding-model availability cannot be assumed.

Editorial read

This edition collects 2 notes across 2 topic areas and 2 sources. Start with AI gateways become operationally useful when model access, tools, and network permissions can be governed through one identity-aware control point, Coding-agent rollouts need a migration path when a model provider can change the terms of a familiar developer tool to get the week's main practical signal before scanning the remaining links.

Edition signal

The September 1 signal is that agent adoption depends as much on the access contract as on the model itself

Tailscale has made Aperture generally available as an AI gateway with identity-linked controls, logging, guardrails, model access, MCP support, and API proxying. At the same time, OpenAI has proposed winding down its direct model contract with Cursor, with a transition period through November 12. Together, the events show why enterprises need an explicit access architecture: approved model routes, portable credentials, policy enforcement, observability, and a tested fallback when a vendor integration changes.
